Huisinish lies at the end of single track road, about 13 miles form Tarbert, at the far west of the Isle of Harris. It’s truly a “long and winding road”, single track but with plenty passing places, and well worth the effort if you like photographing beaches or rocks. The particular special feature of Huisinish is the amount of reddish-pink banded Lewissian Gneiss rock, which I could (and did) explore for hours.
There is a car park and toilet located at the end of the public road and from the car park you will see the beach.
The beach is, like so many on Harris, very attractive and it does have some rocks of it’s own to break up the sand.
However, to get the most out of the photographic potential, I suggest following the track (or just walk across the grass behind the car park) for a few hundred yards to reach another shoreline which looks across to the island of Scarp.
On this stretch will be found the most attractive rocks combined with excellent distant views. Most of the following images were made during a period of light rain, which helped to bring out the colours in the rocks.
