Location: Wallington – the conservatory

Here are a few images from the excellent conservatory/hothouse in the Walled Garden area of Wallington, a National Trust property in Northumberland.

The conservatory is an oasis of calm and warmth at any time of year,with a rich variety of colours,shapes, and textures. As most of the plants are in pots, there is always a chance that changes will have been made between visits, presenting extra photographic variety on top of the normal seasonal variation.

I’ve never had any objections to taking photos in the conservatory,even with the large tripod that supports the Mamiya RZ67 medium format film camera I used to make these images. There is little air movement in the conservatory, so you can afford to use slow shutter speeds without worrying so much about movement, which can be a problem in photographing flowers out of doors.

Most of the images are on Kodak Portra 160 or 400 colour negative film, with a few on Fuji Provia 400X slide film.
